Halloween Safety Tips for Patton Township
By Sophie Weston

Halloween is an exciting time for families in Patton Township, and we want everyone to enjoy the festivities while staying safe. This year, trick-or-treating will take place on Thursday, October 31st from 6-8 PM, with a rain date of November 1st from 5-7 PM. Stay tuned to social media and our website for inclement weather updates.

To ensure a fun and safe Halloween experience for everyone, here are some important safety tips:

For Trick-or-Treaters:

1. Stick to Well-Lit Areas: Only visit homes with porch lights on, and stay in familiar neighborhoods. Carry a flashlight or use reflective tape to stay visible to drivers.

2. Travel in Groups: Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult. Older children should go in groups and stick to a predetermined route.

3. Costume Safety:

   - Ensure costumes are flame-resistant and allow for good visibility.

   - Avoid long, trailing fabrics that could cause tripping.

   - Use face paint or makeup instead of masks to keep your field of vision clear.

4. Stay on Sidewalks: Walk, don't run, and use crosswalks. Avoid darting between parked cars, and stay on sidewalks whenever possible.

For Drivers:

1. Slow Down!: Be extra cautious between 6-8 PM when trick-or-treaters are out. Children may suddenly dart into the street, so reduce your speed and stay alert.

2. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Take extra care when entering or exiting driveways and at intersections, especially in residential areas.

For Homeowners:

1. Light Up the Night: Ensure your porch and walkway are well-lit to signal that you’re participating in trick-or-treating. Clear your yard of any obstacles like garden hoses or decorations that could cause someone to trip.

2. Pet Safety: Keep pets inside or in a secure area away from the front door. Even friendly pets can become stressed with the excitement of Halloween.

For Parents:

1. Set Ground Rules: Discuss safety with your children before heading out if they are trick-or-treating on their own. Set a time to return home and a route to follow.

2. Make Sure They Eat Before They Go: Feeding your kids before trick-or-treating will make them less likely to want to snack on uninspected candy while they’re out.

3. Check the Treats: Before your children eat any candy, inspect it for signs of tampering. Be sure to only eat treats that are factory-wrapped and avoid homemade treats from unfamiliar sources.

By following these simple tips, we can ensure that Halloween is safe and enjoyable for all Patton Township residents. Have fun and happy trick-or-treating!
